Under the guns of the Red Baron, Norman Franks, Hal Giblin and Nigel McCrery,1995 states MvR was flying a Halberstadt DII.

Special: On 23 March 17 the leader of Jagdstaffel 11 Frhr.v.Richthofen was promoted to Oberleutnant out of sequence by A.K. O .” (“Out of sequence” meaning outside of the normal sequence of promotion.)

Post-landing photograph of A6706 reveals damage consistent with an overturned landing (crumpled upper wing, broken propeller with mud on the hub, broken landing gear struts, bent and shorn off wheels), as Richthofen described.
