Er werd gekozen voor een duwconfiguratie omdat het Verenigd Koninkrijk niet beschikte over een kanononderbreker; de oorspronkelijke bevestiging maakte het mogelijk het kanon te verhogen, maar dit werd al snel veranderd in een vaste bevestiging toen piloten leerden het hele vliegtuig op het doel te richten, waarbij ze de zeer responsieve besturing gebruikten om de beste prestaties uit deze wendbare machine te halen. Er werden ongeveer 400 vliegtuigen geproduceerd en vanaf het voorjaar van 1916 speelde de D.H.2 een belangrijke rol bij het verslaan van de \u2018Fokker-plaag\u2019 en daarmee het verkrijgen van Britse luchtsuperioriteit. Bij gebrek aan een vervangend type bleef het toestel tot medio 1917 in gebruik.
